Isla Vista

Isla Vista is an unincorporated, beachside community and a census-designated place in Santa Barbara County adjacent to Santa Barbara which is to the east, and Goleta which is to the west and north. The Pacific Ocean is to the south. The population, estimated at 25,000, has a very high percentage of students who attend the University of California, Santa Barbara located immediately to the east, or at nearby Santa Barbara City College. While much of the housing in Isla Vista is student housing, the community also has some of the highest priced ocean-front housing in California. The first known people to inhabit Isla Vista and the surrounding area were the Chumash Indians, also known as the Chumash People. It is believed they settled the area more than 8,000 years before the area was claimed by Spain and later by Mexico.

Isla Vista History – World War II

On February 23, 1942, a Japanese submarine attacked the Ellwood Oil Field just to the west of Isla Vista causing minor damage. In response, the United States Marines took possession of the land that is currently the University of California, Santa Barbara and Santa Barbara Airport in order to establish the Marine Corps Air Station Santa Barbara. At the time, there was great concern that Japan was planning to invade the West Coast. After the war, the military base was closed.
