San Juan Capistrano


San Juan Capistrano, incorporated in 1961, is a city in south Orange County with a population of approximately 37,500. Mission Viejo is to the north. Laguna Niguel is to the north and west, unincorporated Orange County is to the east, San Clemente is to the south, and Dana Point is to the south and west. San Juan Capistrano is approximately 24 miles from Santa Ana and 25 miles from Newport Beach. The city was developed around Mission San Juan Capistrano which was established in 1776 by the Spanish as the seventh of twenty-one California missions. The San Juan Hills run from Newport Beach to San Juan Capistrano.

Mission San Juan Capistrano

Mission San Juan Capistrano was the seventh of twenty-one Spanish missions to be founded in California. Founded in 1776 by Spanish Catholics of the Franciscan Order, Mission San Juan Capistrano is home to the oldest building still in use in California, a chapel constructed in 1782. The chapel and mission ruins are open to the public and are absolutely worth visiting. The mission is a must-see destination for anyone interested in American history.


Swallows of Capistrano

San Juan Capistrano is world famous for its cliff swallows. The protected birds migrate to and from Mission San Juan Capistrano and Goya, Argentina every year, arriving at the mission every St. Joseph’s Day which is March 19.

San Juan Capistrano Historical Society

The purpose of the San Juan Capistrano Historical Society is to preserve the history and heritage of San Juan Capistrano and the surrounding area. The historical society includes walking tour guides who lead tours of San Juan Capistrano explaining the relevance of historic buildings. The museum collects, preserves, and maintains historical photos, genealogies, oral histories, videos, and other unique and important records and artifacts. The headquarters for the historical society is the O’Neill museum which was built in the 1880s. The museum is open to the public. Memberships are available and donations are greatly appreciated.


Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park

The Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park is an 8,000 acre protected wilderness preserve in the western Santa Ana Mountains of San Juan Capistrano in southern Orange County. It is adjacent to the Cleveland National Forest. Amenities include hiking, biking, and equestrian trails, picnic areas, camping areas, barbeques and fire rings, children’s play areas, showers and restrooms, an amphitheater, and a scenic overlook. The beautiful preserve is very popular.


Sulphur Creek

Sulphur Creek Watershed

Sulphur Creek is a 4.5 mile tributary of Aliso Creek in Orange County, California that drains the southern area of the San Joaquin Hills which includes a large area extending from Newport Beach to San Juan Capistrano. Sulphur Creek is the largest tributary of Aliso Creek and the primary source of water that feeds Laguna Niguel Lake, also referred to as Sulphur Creek Reservoir.

Laguna Niguel Lake

Laguna Niguel Lake is a 44 acre artificial lake and reservoir created in 1966 by the construction of Sulphur Creek Dam on Sulphur Creek in Laguna Niguel. Surrounding the lake is Laguna Niguel Regional Park. The lake is well known for fishing and has a large island in its center. It is quite beautiful.
