Santa Barbara


Santa Barbara, incorporated in 1850, is a city in Santa Barbara County and is the county seat. Santa Barbara is the second most populous city in the county behind Santa Maria, with a population estimated at 94,000. The city is on the coast of Central California facing south and the Santa Barbara Channel. The Santa Ynez Mountains and Los Padres National Forest are to the north. Four of the Channel Islands, are off the coast. San Miguel Island, Santa Rosa Island, and Santa Cruz Island form the largest part of Channel Islands National Park. Montecito, Carpentaria, and Summerland are to the east while Goleta and Isla Vista are to the west. Santa Maria is approximately 65 miles to the northwest, the City of Ventura, in Ventura County is about 34 miles to the southeast, and Agoura Hills, in Los Angeles County is approximately 61 miles to the southeast. Santa Barbara often referred to as the “American Riviera” is a popular tourist and resort destination. It is also the location of several colleges and universities. The first known people to settle in the area were the Chumash People who have lived in Santa Barbara County, Ventura County, and Los Angeles County for more than ten thousand years before the area was claimed by Spain and later by Mexico.

Mission Santa Barbara

Mission Santa Barbara, also known as the Santa Barbara Mission was the tenth of 21 Spanish missions established in California. Founded in 1786 and known as the “Queen of the Missions”, it is open to the public and is definitely worth visiting.


Santa Barbara County Courthouse

The Santa Barbara County Courthouse completed in 1929 and located in downtown Santa Barbara, is a California Historical Landmark, and a U.S. Historic Landmark. It is also listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Occupying an entire city block, the courthouse consists of four Spanish Colonial Revival style buildings. It is considered one of the most beautiful public buildings in California.


Hotel Virginia

Hotel Virginia, also called the Virginia Hotel, built in 1925, is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and has been designated by the City of Santa Barbara as a historical landmark. The architecturally significant and beautiful building is located at 17 W. Haley Street in the historical center of the city.


Shishuchi’i’, California

Shishuchi’i’ was a Chumash Indian village located in what is today Santa Barbara, near Refugio State Beach. The Chumash People occupied the Coast of Santa Barbara County for thousands of years before the arrival of Spanish explorers and the seizure of the land in the name of Spain.


Art, Design & Architecture Museum

The Art, Design & Architecture Museum, established in 1959, is located on the campus of the University of California, Santa Barbara. The museum holds more than 8,600 original works and more than one million historical photos, architectural drawings, and other materials of value to people interested in art and design.
