Santa Clarita Valley Historical Timeline


The Santa Clarita Valley is located in Los Angeles County and is connected to the San Fernando Valley to the south and southwest which is a region of the City of Los Angeles. Castaic Lake, Lake Piru, and the Los Padres National Forest are to the northwest, the Sierra Pelona Mountains and Angeles National Forest are to the north and northeast, the San Gabriel Mountains are to the east and southeast, the Santa Susana Mountains are to the south and southwest, and the Santa Clara River Valley and Ventura County are to the west. Frazier Park, Pyramid Lake, and the San Joaquin Valley are north of the Santa Clarita Valley.  The Antelope Valley, which includes the cities of Palmdale and Lancaster, is to the northeast.

The largest city in the Santa Clarita Valley is the City of Santa Clarita which includes the communities of Valencia, Newhall, Canyon Country, and Saugus. Unincorporated communities include Stevenson Ranch, Castaic, Newhall Ranch, Val Verde, Westridge, Tesoro, and Sunset Point.

The Santa Clarita Valley is the watershed for the Santa Clara River which runs through Ventura County to the Pacific Ocean. Upstream are the communities of Acton and Agua Dulce. Santa Paula, Piru, and Fillmore are downstream.


Bouquet Canyon

Bouquet Dam - Resovoir

Bouquet Canyon is a small unincorporated community in the Santa Clarita Valley region of northern Los Angeles County. The community of Bouquet is located in the Bouquet Canyon which is one of several canyons in the Santa Clarita Valley. The Bouquet Creek, which flows through the canyon, is one of several creeks that feed into the Santa Clara River which flows west through Ventura County, across the Oxnard Plain into the Santa Barbara Channel and Pacific Ocean. The Bouquet Reservoir was formed by the construction of the Bouquet Dam along the creek. The creek originates in the Sierra Pelona Mountains close to Leona Valley.


Pyramid Lake - Pyramid Dam

Pyramid Lake is a large reservoir located near Castaic in northern Los Angeles County. Pyramid Lake was formed by the construction of the 386 foot high Pyramid Dam in 1970 on Piru Creek. Pyramid Lake is part of the California State Water Project and California Aqueduct and is the deepest lake in the system. The reservoir is located on the border between the Angeles National Forest and the Los Padres National Forest. The lake offers fishing, boating, jet skiing, and beautiful picnic areas.



Castaic is an unincorporated, census-designated place in the Santa Clarita Valley region of Los Angeles County located north of Stevenson Ranch and the City of Santa Clarita. Castaic is approximately forty miles northwest of Downtown Los Angeles. The population now exceeds 20,000. The name “Castaic” is a Chumash Indian word. The Chumash People lived in the area for thousands of years before the area was claimed by Spain and later by Mexico.


Castaic Junction

Castaic Junction is a small unincorporated community in the Santa Clarita Valley just outside the City of Santa Clarita. Castaic Junction is located at the intersection of Interstate 5 and State Route 126 at the Santa Clara River. Six Flags Magic Mountain is located within Castaic Junction, but uses a Valencia address. Castaic Junction was the official southern end of the Ridge Route which existed from 1915 to 1970.


Castaic Library

The Castaic Library is a 12,232 square foot full-service library operated by the County of Los Angeles. Services include computers, research materials, a large meeting room with a capacity of 53, study rooms, a children's area, a teen area, and an adult area. Nearby county libraries include the Stevenson Ranch Library and the Acton Agua Dulce Library.


Castaic Animal Shelter

The Castaic Animal Shelter is also known as the Castaic Animal Care Center. The facility is operated by the County of Los Angeles and is located at 31004 Charlie Canyon Road in Castaic just east of The Old Road and Interstate 5. Hasley Canyon

Hasley Canyon is an affluent, residential, census-designated area located northwest of Castaic and east of Sespe Condor Sanctuary. The population is approximately 1,500 and the elevation is 1,765 feet.


Newhall Pass

The Newhall Pass, which links the Santa Clarita Valley to the San Fernando Valley, separates the Santa Susana Mountains from the San Gabriel Mountains and divides the Los Angeles River and Santa Clara River watersheds.


East and Rice Canyons

East and Rice Trails

East and Rice Canyons are two neighboring canyons in the Santa Susana Mountains and Santa Clarita Valley with extensive trails and some of the most lush vegetation in Southern California. The East Canyon Trail leads into the 480 acre Michael D. Antonovich Open Space Preserve which straddles the ridgeline of the Santa Susana Mountains. Entry to the two canyons and trails is at 24255 The Old Road in Newhall.


Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital

The Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, founded in 1975, is a 238 bed non-profit community hospital and trauma center in the Valencia neighborhood of Santa Clarita. The hospital serves the greater Santa Clarita Valley.


Whitney Canyon Park

Whitney Canyon Creek

Whitney Canyon Park is a beautiful 442 acre park and wildlife corridor in the Santa Clarita Valley. Whitney Canyon Park is an entry point into the Angeles National Forest and serves as a critical wildlife corridor between the San Gabriel Mountains and the Santa Susana Mountains. The park has several year-round springs and creeks, and offers many trails for hikers, bikers, and equestrians. The views from Whitney Canyon Park are stunning. The entry to the park is at 20303 Newhall Avenue in Santa Clarita.


San Francisquito Canyon

The San Francisquito Canyon is a canyon, in northern Los Angeles County, created by the erosion of the Sierra Pelona Mountains by San Francisquito Creek. The canyon starts in the north, deep in the Angeles National Forest with its southern end in the Santa Clara Valley. Until 1848 the Francisquito Creek was the site of extensive gold mining. The former St. Francis Dam was located within the canyon.
